Family Sues Over Tainted Peanut Butter

The family of 11-year-old Krystina Brugh has filed a federal lawsuit against ConAgra Foods, Inc., claiming that the food maker's tainted peanut butter is to blame for their daughter's kidney failure. ConAgra, who produces Peter Pan and Great Value brand peanut butter, recalled all of its peanut butter after government investigators traced a salmonella outbreak to its products. ConAgra is facing multiple lawsuits after more than 600 people in 47 states claimed infection from its products.

According to the lawsuit, the jar of peanut butter from which Brugh had been eating was labeled with a product code beginning with the number 2111, identified by the company as possibly being contaminated. Krystina has been on dialysis for five months and is slated to undergo surgery to receive a kidney from her father. Consequently, medical bills have been piling up. Additionally, her parents have been forced to miss work on account of her illness. Her parents are seeking unspecified damages.

Meanwhile, ConAgra plans to reintroduce Peter Pan brand this summer after completing renovations to its factory, where the company believes moisture may have aided growth of the salmonella bacteria.
