The Consumer Product Safety Commission and National Highway Traffic Safety Administration announced a recall yesterday of Evenflo Embraceâ„¢ Infant Car Seat/Carriers. The product has been found to be unsafe when it is used as a carrier because the handle can release from the locked position unexpectedly. When the handle releases it can cause the seat to rotate forward and the child to fall to the ground.

According to the CPSC, Evenflo has received 679 reports of an unexpected release occurring, which has resulted in 160 injuries, including a skull fracture.

The recall affects carriers manufactured before April 6, 2006, and having model numbers 317, 320, 397, 398, 540, 548, 549, 550, 556, 597, 598 or 599. Owners of the carrier can contact Evenflo to receive a repair kit, but should not use the product as a carrier until the repair kit is installed.
